Simply the Best: North American Hairstyling Awards 2010 in Vegas

•July 17, 2010 • Leave a Comment

I’m currently at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas for the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA). In our industry, it’s a huge deal to be nominated for this prestigious award — it’s literally the Emmy of our business.

I’ve made lots of great contacts and caught up with some wonderful people here in this non-stop party city. I’m also thrilled to be here this year to support three of my best friends nominated for top awards:

Ammon Carver – nominated in both “Editorial” and “Contemporary Classic” categories

Nicholas French – nominated in the “Avant Garde” category

Chrystopher Benson – nominated in the “Color” category

You can bet I’ll be cheering them on! They are all amazing artists and I couldn’t be happier at their success. I’m hoping they all go home with even more accolades!

Ready for some big news? Under the sponsorship of Matrix, I’m excitedly planning to submit an entry myself next year! The category? Well, that’s still under wraps. But I’m certainly looking at this year’s awards with a keen eye for what’s to come.

In the meantime, what could be more fun? The past three days have been filled with events…and we’ll cap it off with the glamorous awards themselves.

It’s building to a climax. Tomorrow evening begins with the famous NAHA Red Carpet Reception where we can share toasts and mingle with the other who’s who of the industry. Oh yes…and pose for the paparazzi! Last year, over 2,000 international beauty professionals attended this sold-out event, so I’m sure there will be plenty of style mavens and beautiful people to rub elbows with!

I’ll post more online when I return home to Caviar Salon in Chicago. I’m excited to bring new ideas and style trends to bear on my favorite city. Stay tuned…

Nick Stenson: On the road with Matrix and MAKEOVER GREENSBURG

•June 11, 2010 • Leave a Comment

When I was growing up, my mom occasionally used the phrase, “your hair looks like a tornado hit it.” If we’d lived in Greensburg, Kansas a few years back, she might not have been kidding!

After last weekend’s glitz and glamour as part of the Matrix Artistic Design Team at Orlando’s Premiere 2010 hair show, I’m headed to Kansas for a June 14, 2010 blow-out. Yep, you heard that right. Kansas.

Looking as good as their newly rebuilt city

BIOLAGE and Peel’s Salon Services launched an initiative to aid in celebrating the rebirth of Greensburg, Kansas – a town that on May 4, 2007, was devastated by an EF5 tornado that destroyed 95% of the city. I’m joining them for MAKEOVER GREENSBURG, a celebration of the massive rebuild of a bigger, better, greener Greensburg. The Matrix Artistic Design Team will be doing our part — together with newly rebuilt salon, The Last Tangle, and and Xenon School of Hair Design — to help residents enjoy an afternoon of pampering. From 3 pm – 7 pm, we’re offering complimentary haircuts and makeup consultations.

…and making the Earth a little greener

Additionally, in continuing BIOLAGE’s focus on nature and its mission to give back to the earth, all cut hair will be collected and donated to A Matter of Trust, (www.matteroftrust.org), a non-profit organization that creates products from recycled hair used to soak up oil spills. (Hmmmm? Any idea where we might be in need of this these days?)

That’s the good thing about my job

The days can get long, but I honestly do love being able to help people look their very best. “Dorothy, I think we ARE in Kansas this week” — and I’m happy to say — it’s for a very good cause.

How to Maintain Perfect Hair in a Less-Than-Perfect Economy

Since stretching one’s beauty dollar (ummm — make that ANY dollar, for that matter) is almost de rigueur these days, we’ve made it our business to partner with you on wise spending. Adopt one or two of our favorite tips for maintaining a perfect look despite the economy. (Shhhhh….we won’t tell if you won’t!)

Opt for partial instead of full highlights every other visit
Every other time you step into Caviar, ask your stylist for only “partial” (instead of “full”) highlights. A skilled stylist can refresh your look in strategic places and stretch your color while still giving your wallet a bit of a break.

Add a color gloss to bring new life to your hair
Instead of opting for new color or highlights each time you visit Caviar, ask for a “gloss.” A gloss extends your color by deep conditioning, sealing hair cuticles and adding shine. Depending upon your needs, we can add a gloss to brighten or tone down your existing hue, or simply apply a clear gloss for extra shine. Either way, it’s a win-win.

Do something drastic
Instead of opting for color each time, go for a completely new cut instead! If all the attention is on a great new cut, color takes a back seat for awhile. Save the color drama for your 6-week return visit — and then wow them all over again!

When you can still look great — without stress lines from overspending at the salon — your natural beauty is bound to shine through!

Have you used any of these tips or do you have one of your own to share?
